Genetic Diagnosis — Bioethics

چکیده

The entire human genome will be completely analyzed very shortly and mankind must resolve the issue of how this knowledge will be applied to general medical care in the 21st century. Due to the progress which has hitherto been achieved in gene analysis technology, genetic testing for carrier detection, pre-implantation diagnosis, prenatal diagnosis, presymptomatic diagnosis, predispositional testing, and other tests has become technically easier to conduct. The progress in gene analysis technology has also made it highly possible for prenatal diagnosis, that presently relies on amniocentesis and CVS, to shift to less invasive methods that utilize maternal-fetal blood. What mankind must resolve is how advanced medical technology will be adequately utilized and how it will be justified from the standpoint of bioethics. If technological progress is pursued without addressing the ethical, legal, and social issues that stem from this technology, it will have difficulty gaining public support. Ethnically original bioethics will not evolve in Japan if the unique culture, customs, and practices that exist in this country are ignored. There is an urgent need to address this issue.

Bioethics: why philosophy is essential for progress.

It is the JME's 40th anniversary and my 20th anniversary working in the field. I reflect on the nature of bioethics and medical ethics. I argue that both bioethics and medical ethics together have, in many ways, failed as fields. My diagnosis is that better philosophy is needed. I give some examples of the importance of philosophy to bioethics. I focus mostly on the failure of ethics in researc...

ملاحظات اخلاقی در فناوری‌های نوین ژنتیک با نگاه ویژه به محصولات تراریخته

Genetic research was initially limited to the screening and diagnosis of known hereditary diseases. After the completion of the Human Genome Project (HGP), studies became concerned with the diagnosis and treatment of many non-communicable diseases threatening the public health. Aside from this, genetic engineering, in its new form, is also concerned with the development of recombinant medicatio...

Reproductive autonomous choice--a cherished illusion? Reproductive autonomy examined in the context of preimplantation genetic diagnosis.

Enhancement of autonomous choice may be considered as an important reason for facilitating the use of genetic tests such as preimplantation genetic diagnosis. The principle of respect for autonomy is a crucial component not only of Western liberal traditions but also of Western bioethics. This is especially so in bioethical discussions and analyses of clinical encounters within medicine. On the...

Genetic testing and early diagnosis and intervention: boon or burden?

The possibility of early diagnosis and intervention is radically changed by the advent of genetic testing. The recent report of the Nuffield Council on Bioethics is timely and helpful. I have suggested, that not only the severity of the disability indicated by genetic information, and the accuracy of the data, ought to govern the approach to the implementation of screening for genetic disorders...
